A Kiwirail train that struck a man at the Levin Railway Station last night kept going for a full 5km before the driver realised something had happened.
A man is seriously ill in hospital after being struck by the train around 7pm last night.
Palmerston North police said that the incident occurred at Levin Railway Station and the man lost part of an arm and leg.
His condition was not known.
A KiwiRail spokesman said the train driver did not realise he had hit someone and travelled 5km before stopping.
The Wellington to Palmerston North commuter train was delayed for hours.
