The driver of a train that fatally struck a teenager in mid Canterbury today has been stood down and offered counselling following the incident.
A male in his late teens was hit by the north-bound train in Hinds at 1.20am, police reported.
The driver "stopped immediately" following the incident and has since been stood down and offered counselling as is company policy, said a KiwiRail spokeswoman.
The train was moved from the scene of the accident just after 4.30am after police and emergency services had left, she said.
Police have not yet released the dead teenager's name and are notifying family members.
