A man hit by a freight train in South Auckland this morning is in a serious condition in Middlemore Hospital.
Police said the man, aged between 30 and 40, was hit at the platform at the Manurewa station about 4am.
It took about 70m for the northbound train to stop and the man was found lodged between a carriage and the concrete platform, said Inspector Peter Raynes. He said the man was lucky to survive.
A Middlemore Hospital spokeswoman said the man was in a serious condition this afternoon.
