A wind gust toppled a trailer carrying large window frames and shattered glass was strewn across a stretch of SH2 between Greytown and Carterton yesterday.
Traffic was slowed to a crawl in both directions on the stretch of road immediately south of Waiohine Bridge where the trailer was overturned about 1.30pm.
A northbound driver said he had been following the trailer carrying the wooden-framed panes when a wind gust "caught the trailer".
The driver of the 4X4 towing the trailer had pulled over to the side of the roadside, while his cargo was smashed and spread for metres across both lanes of the road. The trailer came to rest on its side but was still secured to the towing vehicle.
Fulton Hogan workers took about an hour to sweep broken glass from the roadway and a police officer was also at the scene, helping the hapless driver to disconnect and right the trailer.
