A 45-year-old Tauranga man has died after suffering a collapsing during a running event on the Mauao base track this morning.
A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance's Northern Communications unit said she understood the deceased was a competitor in one of this morning's Mitre 10 Mega Tauranga City to Surf fun run.
The annual event included a half marathon, 11km and 5km distance routes, all of which ended with a leg around the base track to the finish line on the Mount Maunganui main beach. Competitors could walk or run.
Paramedics and firefighters were still at the scene at 12.20, having arrived about an hour earlier.
Earlier Fire and Emergency Northern Communications shift manager Scott Osmond said firefighters were assisting St John ambulance with a medical callout.
