KEY POINTS:
Traffic is backing up in the Wellington suburb of Karori after a car crash this morning.
Inspector Steve Darroch said there has been an accident on the corner of Tringham St and Karori Rd and no serious injuries.
The vehicles have been moved off the road but the traffic is thick, he said.
Meanwhile, motorists in the lower North Island are being warned to take extra care this morning after heavy rain and fog made driving hazardous.
Mr Darroch of Wellington said no surface flooding had been reported yet but conditions were "generally pretty bad".
He said motorists should be particularly careful on State Highway 1's Ngauranga Gorge, a Wellington city "hot spot" for accidents.
He urged drivers to pay particular attention to their following distances after a nose-to-tail accident on the southbound lane of SH1 leading into the capital.
There were no reports of injuries.
