Traffic flows smoothly after long weekend

Traffic is flowing smoothly in and out of the country's main centres as holidaymakers return home from their long Anzac weekend.

Northern police communications Shift Inspector Peter Raynes said by 3.30pm they had received no information about any traffic incidents heading into Auckland.

"We've got no information to say that there's going to be any sort of delays.''

Central police communications team leader Amanda Jensen said no major traffic incidents had been reported with holidaymakers returning to Wellington, however "there's a lot of traffic out there''.

Southern police communications Shift Inspector Murray Hirst said there were no reports of vehicle accidents or traffic build-up heading into Christchurch.

Meanwhile, the Transport Agency warned to expect heavy traffic on roads in the Coromandel and northern Waikato.

State Highway One into Wellington was also expected to be busy this afternoon, along with routes from the north and south into Auckland.

Earlier this afternoon at least one person was seriously injured after a motorcycle collided with a pole on State Highway 16 near Wellsford.

Mr Raynes said at least two motorbikes were involved.

One motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition, and a second person received medical attention at the scene, police said.

Roadblocks and diversions were in place on State Highway 16 at Wellsford for southbound traffic, and State Highway 16 and West Coast Road for northbound traffic.

The Waitemata Serious Crash Unit was at the scene and will investigate the cause of the crash.
