Traffic is being diverted after a fatal road crash just north of Ngaruawahia on State Highway One in north Waikato.
A woman was killed after the van she was driving hit a power pole, bringing down power lines and sparking a fire on the grass verge.
Ambulance communications acting team manager Charlie Bougher said the elderly woman was the only occupant of the van, which rolled before hitting the power lines.
Traffic is being diverted at Old Taupiri road.
Police have asked motorists to delay travel or choose other alternatives.
