There are delays for motorists in the central North Island and heading north from Wellington this afternoon.
Police have received reports that pockets of traffic congestion are being experienced as far north as Waiouru.
Traffic heading north up the Kapiti Coast is also extremely heavy and delays of over an hour can be expected there, police say.
This is not due to any accidents and is purely holiday traffic heading out of the capital. There is little that can be done to ease such delays, police said in a statement.
Wellington motorists were advised to leave earlier for their destination or to delay travel if possible.
