That annual joy of joys - traffic congestion as Aucklanders make their way home from Easter holiday weekend destinations - has started in earnest.
Police report traffic flows building on all the major arteries in and out of Auckland this afternoon.
A tail growing to almost 10 kilometres long at Wellsford, just north of Auckland, is one of the worst traffic jams in the region.
Details:
* (south) State Highway 1: At Karapiro in the Waikato it is bumper-to-bumper but flowing;
* (east) State Highway 25: On the Coromandel side of Kopu bridge, the traffic tail is estimated at 2 kilometres long;
* (north) State Highway 1: North of Orewa heading south is very congested, with a tail building up at Wellsford.
Acting Road Policing Manager Paula Rose urging people not to take risks in a bid to get home a little earlier. She is encouraging people who can delay their trips to do so.
She is expecting congestion at the country's main pressure points to last well into the evening.
Motorists have been advised to "expect delays and remain patient".
Auckland motorways were all flowing okay in the early afternoon, police reported.
