KEY POINTS:
Toyota is recalling around 30,000 vehicles in New Zealand that could be affected by a problem with steering relay rods.
Letters have been sent to the owners of the affected Surf, Hilux and 4Runner models.
All the affected cars were assembled in Japan between 1988 and 1996.
Manager for National Service Operations Mark Rounthwaite said the rods could crack, causing a loss of steering as the worst case scenario, but he says it is not something to panic about, as the warrant of fitness system should pick up any major problems.
Mr Rounthwaite said owners can take their vehicle into a Toyota dealer where the steering relay rod will be replaced.
