The big event at Lansdowne this last week took place on Sunday with the staging of the All Teed Up tournament. This was Jamie, Bronnie and Jimmy's way of thanking clients for their support. It was a whiz of a day for the very big field with the accent on fun and novelty, apart from a round of golf.
There were the usual competitions ? team events, individual events, straightest drives and nearest the pin. But there were quite a few quirky additions, including a free kick and a free throw at any point. If you didn't like a shot you were given one "mulligan", that is, a replayed shot without penalty.
A couple of holes had no flagsticks, while others had two ? you could take your pick of holes. Tee and pin placements at times were more than a little tricky, but no complaints were accepted.
Even when the tired and slightly bewildered golfers were back in the club house, they found the show wasn't over. There was a quiz and a limerick competition ? regarding the latter, I think most of the budding poets should stick to golf!
The results show that the "Dams and Rams" team of Val Cobb, Trevor Smith, Pam Williams and Mike Falloon won the teams event with 56 points, although "The Tasty Crumpets" led by Brian Crump were judged to have the best name. Individual results:
Gross: Michael Schofield (70).
Women: Lesley Roberts 45 pts 1st, Val Cobb 41 pts 2nd.
Men Group 1: Dennis Hogg 45 pts 1st, Henry Stechman 44 pts 2nd.
Men Group 2: John Gold 42 pts 1st, Mike Falloon 42 pts 2nd.
Goff Moorcock showed his arboreal tendencies by taking out the inaugural contest for the "Hit the Tree" trophy. One of the trickiest pin placements was at the 11th hole, though the organisers did try to help by making the hole as big as a bucket. Notwithstanding, and from a drive that finished just six feet from the pin, Luciana Williams took 5 putts!
Peter Connell displayed his literary leanings with the best limerick, an hilarious affair, but then he also took the "scenic award". Peter had 13 ringers in his round with just five holes counting in his score.
Andy Hale has been out of bounds many times with his well known tendency to spray his shots. At the second hole he finished near the fence, so he decided to take the free throw allowed in the event. To his mortification he forgot to let go till past his follow through so the ball went over his shoulder ? and out of bounds!
And as for the quiz, would you know where to plant a bandarilla, or who was the only divorced US President?
All in all, it was a jolly good day, with the organisers deserving a hearty vote of thanks.
Saturday was a much more mundane affair with the contest for the Hornabrook Cup taken by Sofi Fanua with a score of +7. Detailed results:
Men Group 1: Tony Iggulden +3 1st, Mike Dixon +2 2nd.
Men Group 2: Sofi Fanua +7 1st, Doug Yarrall +4 2nd.
Women: Lesley Roberts 37 pts 1st.
Nearest the pin awards went to Bob Hill at the Alex McLeod 8th hole, to Jock Blathwayt at the Fire Services 11th, and to Ray Verhaart at the Money Managers 18th hole.
The men's championships have reached the semi-final stage, and those involved should note that next Sunday, November 21, is Club Finals day, so the semis must be completed before then.
In the Seniors there is a father and son match up between Sam and Peter Forrester, while Simon Dew meets Robin Smith. The Intermediates has Jeff Harrild versus Nigel Udy, while Mike Dixon is up against Derek Clarkson.
Gary Tennant plays Neil Anderson and Ron Garrod meets Doug Yarrall in Junior A, while Cor Van Kesteren faces Ash Peterson in one semi-final of the Masters with Barry Smith still not sure of his opponent in the other.
On Monday, in cloudy, windy conditions, the Vets had their weekly competition which was the third and last round in the Metlife Care Tournament. Results:
Women: Colleen Hamilton 30 pts 1st, Bib Vallance 26 pts 2nd, Barbara Hullena 23 pts 3rd.
Men Group 1: Brian Maunsell 27 pts 1st, Mick Gates 27 pts 2nd, Harvey Ward 26 pts 3rd.
Men Group 2: Vic Domanski 27 pts 1st, Graeme Newland 27 pts 2nd, John Wales 27 pts 3rd.
Mick Gates was nearest the pin at the Fagan Ford 8th hole, while he and Keith Williams were the only two to get two's.
On Tuesday over 30 women played in what was described as a "Fun Day", but I'm afraid I don't have any results from that. The women's AGM and prize giving were held that afternoon followed by a dinner.
Regarding the AGM I can report that Jan Williams stays as Club Captain with Margaret Irwin as the Women's President once again. Jenni Johnston is the new Secretary while Liz Armstrong, Liz Waddington and Jenny Sadler are stepping down from the women's committee.
Off The Fairway
Tori Forrester doesn't believe in doing things the easy way. Playing in the Silver Division of the Champion of Champions at Miramar last Saturday, Tori, on the very first hole, put her drive into a hazard. It was playable but to hit the ball she had to stand in a ditch full of dirty evil-smelling water.
Off came the shoes and socks and into the water went our heroine. A tremendous wood saw her up by the green with a par 4 for her bravery. The problem was that she still had 35 holes to go in wet, uncomfortable and somewhat pungent footwear.
