Two tourists in Mt Aspiring National Park on the West Coast have been airlifted to safety after getting trapped by a swollen river.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said a search and rescue team from Wanaka was sent in to look for the pair who were walking near Fantail Falls earlier today.
"While the tourists were on the track the river has come up behind them, and they could not get back across," he said.
Snr Sgt Benn said the pair were found cold, tired and wet, but otherwise unharmed. They were flown out about 7pm.
