Tourists are going hungry because Rotorua restaurants and cafes are closing too early.
Event organisers say people streaming out of major events in the city can't find places to eat.
The organisers say they're looking at ways to keep restaurant owners informed about big events in Rotorua to encourage them to stay open later.
Some cafes and restaurants close their kitchens at 9pm, considered too early by visitors and residents who say it's not good enough for a tourist destination.
Restaurant owners say extra patronage can never be assured, but they would welcome better communication about events.
With the new Rotorua Energy Events Centre attracting more, big events to the city (an estimated 50,000 people in its first year), early closing is expected to remain an issue.
The centre said it would not be viable for it to open its own restaurant. Event Venues general manager Peter McLeod said eating establishments should stay open later, especially during big events.
He is to meet Rotorua's Chamber of Commerce to discuss ways to keep restaurateurs informed.
Some restaurants say it's often not worth staying open later.
"We are in a Catch 22 ... you can't guarantee what is going to happen," said Relish Cafe owner Liz Fowler.
Being informed about events would be useful but would not guarantee extra patronage.
