Tourists crash into cow in King Country

A group of tourists crashed into a cow in King Country early this morning.

None of the four men in the car were injured after the crash on State Highway 3 near Te Kuiti, but Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond said the cow died as a result.

"There were no significant injuries," he said.

"They were all a bit lucky, except for the cow."

Te Kuiti Fire Brigade deputy chief fire officer Phil New said the group were heading to Taupo from Waitomo when they hit the cow after it walked onto the road.

"They never would've seen it. They were a bit shaken up afterwards," he said.

It was reported that the car was written off after the crash.

There were a number of other crashes in the region overnight.

A car rolled and landed on its side near Hamilton Airport about 11.30pm, and a car crashed into a power pole in Ngongotaha at 2.50am.

In the Coromandel, two people escaped serious harm after crashing down a bank at 8.40am this morning. Two people were found with minor injuries.
