A British tourist in Otago rescued a fur seal from the jaws of a pit bull-like dog by hitting it on the nose to make it release its grip.
Paul Smith, 45, and his partner Jennie Down, 55, were walking along Allans beach on the Otago Peninsula on Wednesday evening when they saw the dog, accompanied by three men, grab hold of the seal.
Mr Smith said two of the men tried to restrain the dog.
Mr Smith then helped pull and knock the dog's nose in an effort to make it let go, which it did after a minute, the Otago Daily Times reported today.
Constable Lox Kellas, of Portobello, said the attack, which happened about 6.30pm, was also seen by German tourists.
The men left the scene shortly after in a small blue car, Constable Kellas said.
A witness said as soon as the seal was free, it took off for the water. The dog was bleeding from the face.
Under Dunedin City Council's bylaws, dogs can be let off the leash at Allans beach but must remain under control by voice or sign.
