A tourist was threatened with a knife and had his backpack stolen after he was dropped off outside Blenheim last week.
Police said the 21-year-old Swedish backpacker was mugged last Wednesday at about 11pm on SH6 near Bells Rd.
"The tourist had hitchhiked from St Arnaud to Blenheim and had just been dropped off on the outskirts of town," police said.
The backpacker told police two men approached him, one demanding cash.
One of the men allegedly threatened him with a knife. The backpacker dropped his pack and ran, fearing for his safety. He then slept rough for the night before reporting the incident.
