KEY POINTS:
Alan Paul Leger of Boston, USA, was the tourist killed in the Aoraki Mt Cook National Park.
His family, from Massachusetts, USA, have been notified.
Mr Leger, 57, was reported overdue from a day walk around 5pm on Friday.
He had not left a record of his intentions but was seen leaving Mueller Hut at about 1.45pm on Friday.
An aerial search by The Helicopter Line and members of the DoC Mountain Rescue Team failed to locate Mr Leger in failing light.
The search resumed yesterday morning and Mr Leger's body was spotted from the helicopter in a narrow rocky gorge.
The thermal imaging equipment indicated there was no sign of life.
It is believed that he may have missed the turnoff on the track back to Sealy Tarns and continued down a ridge before slipping and falling to his death.
Mr Leger's travelling companion is arranging to travel back to the United States with the deceased at the request of his family.
