An Australian tourist who caught a taxi to his car at Frankton and then set off to drive to nearby Queenstown was found to be nearly three times over the limit when breath tested.
The taxi driver had alerted the police to the man, 37, who apparently smashed into a parked car during his 4am journey.
Sergeant Blair Duffy, of Queenstown, said the man had blown 1030mcg and had elected to take a blood test. He also faces a charge of careless driving.
