KEY POINTS:
A 19-year-old male English tourist has died in a quad bike accident on a kiwifruit orchard in Katikati.
The accident occurred at 1.20pm yesterday when the quad bike with two people on it lost control while descending a slope and hit a shelter belt, Senior Sergeant Stu Graham said.
The injured man, who was driving, was transferred to Tauranga Hospital by helicopter but died at 9.27pm.
Police expect to name him later today.
The man had injuries to his chest, legs and head. The passenger received minor injuries.
The on-farm handling of quad bikes has been an issue raised by accident investigators and insurers. Bikes have been getting bigger and more powerful. Training of riders has also been an issue.
