A 58-year-old German tourist collapsed and died while taking part in a guided walk at the Franz Josef Glacier valley basin today.
The man collapsed at about midday and while first aid was administered at the scene and at the Franz Josef medical centre, attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
The cause of death is unknown, but police said there were no suspicious circumstances and they were investigating on the behalf of the coroner.
Police are unable to release the name until next of kin have been advised.
