KEY POINTS:
Police have charged the driver of a campervan with careless driving causing death after one of his passengers was killed when the vehicle collided with a four-wheel-drive.
Adam James Birdsey, 23, one of five English tourists travelling in the campervan, died in the collision on Friday morning on the outskirts of Blenheim.
The other young Englishmen were injured, as were the occupants of the 4WD, Bruce Craig, 55, his wife Barbara Craig, 51, and their son Jordan Craig, 18, all of Christchurch.
The surviving English tourists are David McCallum, 23, Ian Mills, 22, Dean Clark, 22, and Samuel Barber, but police have not said who was driving.
The driver has been interviewed, charged and released on bail to appear this week in the Blenheim District Court.
After the crash at the intersection of Old Renwick and Jacksons Rds, all seven survivors were taken to hospitals in Wellington and Blenheim. All were expected to make full recoveries.
The Easter road toll last night stood at four after a pedestrian was hit by a car in the Northland township of Waima yesterday.
The incident happened on State Highway 12 at Waima, 28km southwest of Kaikohe, just before 10am.
Police said last night the dead person was a male but gave no more details as next-of-kin were yet to be informed.
Raymond Tuigamala, 22, of Featherston, died after his car hit a tree just north of Greytown early on Friday.
And in Pukekohe, a 22-year-old man died after the motorbike he was riding left the road in the town.
Police said the accident happened on Station Rd about 2.30pm on Saturday. The young man has yet to be publicly identified.
