KEY POINTS:
Top doctoral students have been awarded just under $4.4 million in scholarships over the next three years, Tertiary Education Minister Pete Hodgson said today.
The scholarships are going to 42 students and Mr Hodgson said the funding recognised that a strong research sector was essential for New Zealand's economic and social development.
"This round of scholarship recipients covers many different disciplines," Mr Hodgson said.
"While some research contributes directly to product and technological innovation, other research assists us to better understand social, economic and environmental problems."
