Matt Spooner and Katie Wyeth justified their top seedings in the regional one singles events when the Wairarapa closed tennis championships came to an end at the Masterton Tennis Centre on Saturday.
Spooner, from Carterton, did not, however, have everything his own way in his final with Masterton's Luke Atkinson. The first set saw Spooner execute a number of excellent backhand winners on his way to a relatively comfortable 6-3 advantage but the hard-hitting Atkinson forced a number of errors in the second set. It was even stevens at 6-6 with Spooner taking the tiebreaker, and the title, 7-3.
The women's singles was played under a round robin format and Wyeth's dominance was indicated by the fact she dropped only three games in her three matches. The Opaki player's main threat was expected to be Georgia Atkinson (Masterton) but Wyeth easily won their midweek fixture 6-0, 6-2 and on Saturday she beat Bridget Needham (Gladstone) 6-0, 6-0 and Dushka Warren (Masterton) 6-1, 6-0.
The regional one men's singles plate final saw Alistair McWilliam (Gladstone) beat John McNab (Opaki) 6-4, 7-5. Third place there went to Brett Dymond (Opaki) when Chad Parsons (Masterton) was forced to default because of injury.
Spooner picked up a second title when he combined with Chris Schofield (Gladstone) to beat Atkinson and Tim Pickering 6-1 in the regional one men's doubles final. Schofield played some excellent tennis from the back court and often set up Spooner at the net to hit clear winners. Dymond and his Opaki teammate Stu Wyeth took the third placing.
