KEY POINTS:
An Auckland Grammar School teacher has been stood down pending an investigation into a late-night incident on school grounds in which he is believed to have pointed a weapon at some of the first XV rugby players.
The incident happened after the first XV's end-of-year function last Thursday night.
The Herald understands some of the players returned to the school grounds late that night and a male teacher believed to live in a school house heard the noise and approached them with a weapon, possibly an air rifle.
Auckland Grammar headmaster John Morris confirmed the encounter and said the teacher had been stood down while it was investigated.
"There was a weapon there, but at the time the teacher did not know they were boys from the school and they didn't know it was a teacher."
Mr Morris said it happened in the dark at about 3am and police were investigating so he could not comment any further.
First XV players spoken to by the Herald either denied knowing of the incident or would not comment.
A staff member who didn't want to be named said other staff had not been told of the incident and had only heard "hearsay" versions of the night from students.
