KEY POINTS:
Jockey Michael Walker has been discharged from Auckland Hospital but will likely never ride again.
The 24-year-old suffered serious head injuries when he fell down a 10 metre bank while hunting in North Taranaki on May 20.
He is now undergoing rehabilitation for his coordination, coherency and speech.
Mr Walker's agent Aidan Rodley says medical staff are still trying to establish the extent of his head injuries.
He says Mr Walker has been making decent progress, which he will no doubt be happy with considering he came close to dying.
The expected length of the rehabilitation is not yet clear. Mr Rodley says the extent of the jockey's injuries are not yet known and it is unlikely he will ride again if it puts his life at risk.
Mr Rodley says Michael Walker is a gifted rider and it would a shame to lose his talent.
He says everyone is hoping he makes a full recovery.
Walker, 24, was carrying a pig during a hunting trip in Okau, northeast of New Plymouth, on Tuesday May 20, when he tumbled down a 10m bank.
He was with his partner's brother, Brad Smith, and another friend, Brian Crow of Waitara.
Walker spent the night in bush before Mr Crow tramped out and alerted emergency services.
Mr Smith witnessed the fall and comforted Walker in the bush all night.
Walker has ridden 173 winners this season, more than any other jockey.
