Records are expected to tumble at the Wairarapa swimming championships to be held at the Genesis Recreation Centre pool in Masterton this weekend.
Outstanding results achieved by local swimmers at the recent Wellington long course indicate most of the local "top guns" are nearing peak form as they seek to register times that will qualify them for national competition.
While it was Carterton duo Joe Hammond and Bella Biggs who grabbed the limelight in the capital by amassing the most points in their respective age groups, several others also impressed with top-10 placings, including Eternal Thompson, Zach Hullah, Noemi Leinfeller, Kate Sims, Jessie Parker, Dallas Swaneveld, Oliver Donaldson, Charlotte Hamill-Harris, Brittany Wildman, Will McMaster, Amy Te Maro, Emma Samuel, Sven Tobias and Jacob Smith.
Meanwhile, the Featherston Swimming Club will stage its annual community relay at its pool next Tuesday. To date, six entries have been received with another 10 in the pipeline.
Swimming NZ chief Mike Byrne has indicated he will be bringing a team from over the hill and there is a whisper former Olympian Jon Winter, who did his early schooling in the Featherston region, could also be among the starters. The winning team will receive the Pioneer Trophy, currently held by the Westside Raiders line-up of the three Vollebregts, Hugo, Isaac and Tom, and Ryan Barham.
