TOP music acts from both sides of the Tasman are coming to Masterton for what organisers describe as one of the best line-ups ever for the annual NZ Community Trust Summer Hummer concert.
Hip hop sensation Scribe tops the billing, joined by Melbourne-based Kiwi band Fur Patrol for the February 8 outdoor concert at Masterton's Colin Pugh Sports Bowl.
Mixing it with the big time will be Dannevirke band Mana and Lakeview School band Under Construction as supporting acts.
Scribe, 23, of Christchurch, is the shining star of New Zealand's much-celebrated young hip-hop scene.
He made history when his debut album The Crusader and his debut single Stand Up/Not Many made him the first New Zealand artist to hold the top single and album spots simultaneously.
Stand Up spent 12 weeks at No 1 on the New Zealand charts ? a record for the longest-running No 1 by a New Zealand artist. The Crusader album has now achieved five-times platinum status after going gold within hours of release in October last year.
Scribe dominated this year's NZ Music Awards, collecting seven awards including best male solo artist, songwriter of the year, album of the year, single of the year and people's choice.
Masterton Mayor Bob Francis said correspondence from Wairarapa young people about what they wanted for next year's concert had shown universal approval for Scribe.
Fur Patrol captivated the crowd at the 2001 Summer Hummer, with music including their No 1 single Lydia, from their platinum-selling debut album Pet.
A spokesperson said the band was "over the moon" to be included as part of the Summer Hummer series.
Support act Mana plays a dance pop style and have released their independent album Resonater. The three-piece Dannevirke band was formed in January this year.
Lakeview School's aptly-named band Under Construction was formed this year while the new school was being built. The six musicians aged 12 to 13 will play a mix of rock music covers for their home crowd.
Teacher Rick Luff said the band is highly motivated by their Summer Hummer booking which was a great opportunity for young talent to gain experience and be recognised.
Summer Hummer 2005 kicks off with Under Construction from 5.30pm, followed by Mana, then the main acts Fur Patrol and Scribe, finishing at 8.30pm.
