KEY POINTS:
Five died on the roads at the weekend, including Kerry Mavis Peka, 34, of Rotorua, who was found dead on SH33 between Rotorua and Okere Falls at about 2.30am on Saturday.
Detective Sergeant George Staunton said Ms Peka died from a head injury consistent with vehicle impact.
He said a vehicle "of interest" to the investigation had been found and was being held for forensic examination. Police have spoken to the driver and passenger of the car.
Also on Saturday, a fatal head-on collision between members of a motorcycle convoy in the Coromandel left two dead.
The pair was travelling on SH 25 near Whangamata, 3km north of the Opoutere turn-off, when the crash happened. One of the slain riders raced ahead, then turned around and collided with the other.
Also that day, a 53-year-old man died after rolling his Mitsubishi L200 double cab ute between Sanson and Palmerston North.
On Friday night, a pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle in Drury, south of Papakura.
The names of four of the five dead are yet to be released.
