KEY POINTS:
Queues of flustered motorists at cash payment kiosks have prompted cuts to the cost of setting up an account for using the Northern Gateway toll road.
The NZ Transport Agency said it hoped to encourage more motorists to use the online and freephone payment options by reducing the minimum balance to set up an account.
Customers would now make an initial payment of $20 instead of $44 to open an account.
Accounts won't need to be topped up until the amount drops to $10 (previously $24) and the accounts can be topped up by $10.
