A mother is warning parents to check kids' new clothing after finding sharp staples in underwear bought for her 2-year-old daughter.
PhD student Amanda George bought eight packets of underwear from a T&T Childrenswear store. Her daughter wore several pairs without any problem but one pair made her distressed and George was shocked to find that three sharp staples holding the seams together had left scratches up and down her daughter's legs.
She checked the other pieces and found they were stitched together, not stapled.
George complained to the store manager who sent the underwear to head office.
T & T Childrenswear merchandise operations manager Pamela Viljoen said she had demanded answers from the agent representing the Chinese factory that made the product.
She "deeply regretted" the incident and vowed not to use the factory again.
Viljoen, who emailed an apology to George, said remaining stock from the same order had been checked and cleared.
She said the company had strict quality controls, including garments going under metal detectors, and wanted to find out how the garment had got on a shop floor.
