A young family's holiday ended abruptly when their 18-month-old fell off a picnic table and landed on his head.
The Auckland family had been sitting at the table near the Matarangi Drive playground in Matarangi when the boy climbed on top of the table.
Coromandel Rescue Trust Helicopter intensive care flight paramedic Russell Clarke said the boy's parents had been momentarily distracted by his twin sister and turned when they heard the left side of his head hit the concrete pad.
He said the toddler was a typical little boy who loved to climb.
The boy was responsive when the rescue helicopter arrived to take him to Starship Hospital with moderate injuries.
