A 13-month-old baby is in a serious condition in Auckland's Starship Hospital after being run over in the driveway of a North Canterbury home yesterday.
Police said the baby boy was in a stable condition today after suffering a broken neck, broken leg and serious head injuries.
The incident happened in his parents' Rangiora driveway about 10.50am.
Sergeant Rob Irvine said the baby had apparently been hit by a station wagon in the driveway and may have been "partially run over".
"It's a pretty tragic accident, really," he said.
A work colleague of one of the baby's parents was driving the station wagon and had just delivered some goods to the house.
The baby was flown to Starship Hospital after being treated by emergency doctors at Christchurch Hospital.
Mr Irvine said police were continuing their investigation.
"We don't really know at this stage what, if any, charges will be laid."
