A two-year-old boy was in a stable condition in hospital today with face injuries after a dog attack yesterday.
The boy, who is about to turn three, was rushed to Palmerston North Hospital after the attack in Levin just before midday.
He was playing with another child on a road when what was thought to be a labrador-pitbull cross attacked him, causing extensive injuries to his face.
He was admitted to a children's ward after undergoing about four hours of surgery.
Police said the husband of the boy's caregiver saw the dog on top of the him "ripping into his face".
The man kicked it and chased it down the street before losing sight of it.
Police say they've identified a dog they believe could be responsible.
