KEY POINTS:
A tragic household accident claimed the life of a two-year-old boy in Hastings yesterday.
Senior Sergeant Ross Smith said it appeared the toddler was pulling on a heavy fire-surround when it toppled over and landed on him.
He was critically injured and died soon afterwards.
Mr Smith said the accident happened early yesterday afternoon and urged people to be vigilant about preventing such tragedies.
"I guess it's a timely reminder for all parents of young children to make sure heavy objects like book cases and fire-surrounds are actually attached to walls," he said.
