KEY POINTS:
A three year-old has died after suffering from what police described as "unexplained head injuries".
Dylan Hohepa Tonga Rimoni died this morning after life support was turned off yesterday.
The Papakura toddler was rushed to Middlemore Hospital by ambulance late on Tuesday night. He was later transferred to Starship.
Police spokeswoman Angeline Barlow said the Counties Manukau Child abuse team were investigating the case.
She said police were alerted to the case by hospital staff.
"Police are working with the foster family, who were caring for Dylan at the time, to piece together the course of events which led to the young boy's death," Ms Barlow said.
She said a scene examination was taking place at the family home in Drury and a post-mortem would be finished today.
Child, Youth and Family told NZPA the child was not in their care or custody.
