KEY POINTS:
A toddler died today after reportedly falling from a digger at Broadlands, near Taupo.
Rotorua CIB chief Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Loper said police were investigating the 16-month-old boy's death.
He said initial reports suggested the digger had been operational at the time of the boy's fatal fall, but it now appeared the vehicle was parked.
"Inquiries are continuing and various witnesses are being spoken to, including the parents of the deceased child, both of whom are extremely upset," Mr Loper said.
The boy was taken to Rotorua Hospital where his death was confirmed. A post mortem examination will be carried out in Auckland tomorrow.
