Pirinoa's hold on the Wairarapa regional one tennis title was looking a trifle shaky after their surprise loss to Opaki last weekend and they will be looking to bounce back quickly when they play Martinborough at Pirinoa tomorrow.
It was their lack of success in the men's singles which cost Pirinoa last weekend with only No.4 player Steve McDonald picking up a win there but whether Martinborough have the depth to create similar problems for them is questionable. Interestingly enough their only two losses in their comfortable win over Masterton last weekend came in the men's singles as well.
In the women's section too the odds seem to favour Pirinoa having the edge, led as they are by former Central Districts representative Leanne Sweeney, who is yet to be beaten in singles play on the club scene this season.
Opaki will be brimming with confidence as they prepare to take on Carterton at Opaki and news that Carterton will be without a regular mainstay in Cathy Rolls only adds strength to the contention that a decisive Opaki win is in the offing. They should dominate both singles and doubles play.
Gladstone will be at home to Masterton and here too a comfortable victory is the most likely result with Gladstone taking the spoils. The Stevensons, Baden and Emma, should give them the edge at the top of the singles order and their presence should also guarantee that Masterton struggle to make an impact in the doubles too.
