Vice-president of the Circle Ted Mannell (above) said Barry and Lil Cook's Domesa orchid likely took Best in Show - three other specimen and species' trophies - because of the way it flowers all around, which is relatively difficult to do.
The shows are about timing, said Mr Mannell, getting the orchid to flower precisely at the right time.
Mr Mannell has been involved with orchid-growing clubs for about 18 years, and while the numbers of enthusiasts is dwindling, he still loves the challenge.
"It's entertaining, and drives you nuts ... if you can find the right place they'll grow like weeds."
