KEY POINTS:
Time is running out for 16 missing Indian pilgrims who have failed to come forward.
They were part of a 40 strong group which disappeared in Auckland last month en route to World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney. Their visitor permits expire tomorrow and on Thursday.
The Department of Labour says four pilgrims have returned to India and it knows the location of about 20 others. The Indian High Commission and the Indian community are helping to locate the remaining 16.
They will not be deemed to be in the country unlawfully, until their permits expire. If they do not leave, they will have the right to make a case to the Removal Review Authority to remain in New Zealand.
It is believed the group were victims of an immigration scam and had paid $17,000 each on the belief they would be granted permanent residency in New Zealand.
