Then there was Diana who renewed an interest in the royal family. She won our hearts well and truly.
Sadly, her fairytale ending we all craved for didn't come about. She showed us love and life is ephemeral though.
Then alone came a new hope; Kate. It's bit like a rock star mentality takes over whenever royalty decides to drop in Downunder. Just listen to the young ones who catch a glimpse of them.
Now it is the beautiful Duchess of Cambridge, Kate, hanging off Diana's handsome son William's arm who has wooed the crowds.
It's clear by the screams and cries of everyone on the street who lines up to see the pair that she is a popular choice.
She is real and everyone has warmed to her endearing ways. She's just so, dare I say it, common. It couldn't have just been any beautiful a woman. Kate seems the perfect match and well accepted wherever she goes.
Then there is the bonny wee Prince George; who could forget him. Two future heirs to the throne within touching distance.
But who are they to us really.
This surely raises the issue of whether New Zealand wants to keep those links alive with royalty and Britain.
It's been a debate for a while and while John Key doesn't think this is the time to address it, I'd say it is the perfect opportunity. The issue is right in front of us, so I can't see why not.
Maybe some of us want to keep these ties now we have had a taste.
Fairy tales should always have the perfect ending.
