A piece of West Coast history has appeared on Hokitika Beach and is being called a discovery of national significance.
Part of a ship estimated to be more than 100 years old was uncovered by the tide and salvaged by local history buffs.
Hokitika Coastguard captain Max Dowell said the timber cut and type suggested it could be an American or European ship.
