Singer Tiki Taane has been charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence and will appear in court later this week.
Taane, 34, was performing at a club in Tauranga early yesterday when police arrived to carry out a standard inspection of the premises, Sunlive.co.nz reported.
A number of concert goers alleged he began singing "f**k the police" while officers did their inspection.
His manager and sister Nina Taane said he was arrested near closing time about 3am.
She said other people were arrested with him.
One person who did not want to be named said "things got out of hand" when police approached him.
Taane, a former member of leading New Zealand band Salmonella Dub, is best known for his number one solo hit Always On My Mind.
He is due to appear in Tauranga District Court on Friday.
Western Bay of Plenty police confirmed this afternoon that they arrested a 34-year-old musician at a Tauranga tavern early yesterday and he had been charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence.
A 24-year-old man was also charged with obstruction and resisting arrest.
Acting area commander, Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair, said police would not comment further because the case was now before the court.
