All eyes were on the tigers at Auckland Zoo yesterday as three rare Sumatran tigers celebrated their first birthday. There are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the world so to celebrate the cubs birthday the zoo yesterday hosted a tiger-themed birthday party. Live entertainment, chalk painting, free tiger face painting and opportunities to wish the cubs happy birthday when they are treated to their first birthday cake was all on offer.
It was set to begin at 10.30am but crowds of wellwishers were left with a two and a half hour wait until male cubs Jalur and Berani and their sister Cinta finally came outside.
