Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected over far northern Northland tonight and early tomorrow, remaining in the area until tomorrow afternoon, the MetService says.
Some of the thunderstorms were expected to be severe, and rainfall rates up to 40mm an hour possible.
"Rainfalls of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips," said forecaster Paul Mallinson.
"Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain. In addition, there is also the possibility of weak tornadoes, especially in coastal areas."
