A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for large parts of the upper North Island.
It covers Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Waitomo.
Forecasters warn that two narrow lines of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move over the north of the North Island this morning and early afternoon.
Strong winds are also likely, while flash flooding and slips are possible.
Driving conditions could be hazardous.
