MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the top half of the North Island.
A frontal band is expected to move onto Northland late this evening and make its way across the Auckland and areas of the Coromandel in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Gusts of 110 kilometres an hour are possible, along with localised downpours and even tornadoes.
MetService says it is the type of weather that can bring down trees and power lines, cause flash flooding and make driving hazardous.
