Three suspicious fires in Eastern Bay of Plenty

Police are seeking witnesses following three suspicious fires which burned down homes in the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

The three fires burned down homes in the Te Kaha and Waihau Bay areas, Eastern Bay of Plenty police detective sergeant Darren Thomas said.

"Thankfully, no-one was injured but a significant amount of valuable property was destroyed."

He said police were currently investigating.

A 71-year-old man and his 30-year-old son have been charged with arson in relation to a fire in Hakota near Te Kaha on April 23.

Police were following lines of enquiry on two other fires on State Highway 35.

One was on Saturday July 16 in Waihau Bay and the other was on August 12 in Te Kaha.

"We are very grateful to the local community who have provided valuable information so far, which has allowed us to progress these investigations.

"We will continue to work with the community to bring these matters to a satisfactory resolution.

"By apprehending these offenders, we hope to prevent any further damage to property in this beautiful part of the country."
