Canterbury has been shaken by three shallow quakes today.
The largest, a magnitude 4.7 earthquake which struck at 1.30pm, hit a depth of 11 kilometres and was located 20 kilometres south west of Christchurch according to Geonet.
It was described in a tweet written by musician Hayden East as "a long wobble with a hard jolt in the middle".
It followed a magnitude 4.0 earthquake which struck near Lyttelton 15 minutes earlier.
It hit at a depth of five kilometres and was located within five kilometres from Lyttelton - the epicentre of February's massive earthquake, GeoNet reported.
