The first of three separate trials resulting from a gang shoot-out at Wairoa last year has begun in the Wellington High Court today.
Justice Alan MacKenzie has suppressed all evidence to avoid prejudice against later accused.
A jury of nine men and three women was selected this morning for the first trial - that of Saul Waihape, Heath Tamaka, Vincent Monika, Norton Hunia, Montoya Douglas and Moihana Clarke.
Their charges include wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, participation in an organised criminal group and unlawful possession of a firearm.
